AI search for small businesses
What matters, what's hype and what to do first.

People now ask chatbots and see AI-written summaries at the top of search results. Is that a threat to your business? Probably less than you’ve heard, but it’s worth a calm look.
What’s actually changing
Some searches now end in an AI-written answer, with a few sources cited. Others still end on a list of websites. People use both. The AI answers draw on pages from the open web, so the web still matters.
What helps you get mentioned
- A site that search engines can crawl and understand. Without this, nothing else works.
- Clear facts about your business, repeated the same way everywhere: name, what you do, where, for whom.
- Structured data that states those facts in a form machines read.
- Mentions on credible sites that others already trust.
- Pages that actually answer the questions your customers ask.
What’s hype
No one can promise you a mention in an answer. No special file makes an AI tool cite you. “SEO is dead” is a slogan, not a finding.
What to do first
Check the basics: is your site crawlable, are your listings correct, do your pages answer real questions? Then ask a few of your customers’ questions in the tools yourself and note whether you appear. If you want it done properly, a test across a defined question set gives you something you can compare next month.
